Taunton Minster

The tower of Taunton Minster dominates the town centre in a way that makes you stop and look up. Built over centuries - mostly 15th century, though the church itself is older - it's one of Somerset's finest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture, all soaring stonework and intricate detail. Inside, the scale hits you immediately. High ceilings, beautiful stained glass, and that particular smell of old stone and polish that seems to come with centuries of worship.

This is one for architecture enthusiasts and history types rather than kids who need constant entertainment. You could potter around for twenty minutes or spend an hour reading the wall plaques and taking in the craftsmanship. There's no gimmickry here - just good medieval building and genuine atmosphere. The town itself is nothing to write home about, but the Minster is genuinely worth the detour if you're staying at any of the nearby parks: Cornish Farm Touring Park is barely over a mile away, making it a quick trip into town.

Admission is typically free - it's a functioning parish church, not a ticketed attraction - though a donation box by the entrance wouldn't go amiss. Best to visit during daylight hours to appreciate the stained glass properly. In summer, the light through the windows is particularly good. If you're doing a week-long touring break in Somerset, this doesn't demand a special trip, but combine it with a wander round Taunton's market and you've got a decent morning sorted.
