Tatton Mere

The lake sits right at the heart of Tatton Park estate, just outside Knutsford, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick loop. You get water on three sides, mature trees framing the shoreline, and on a clear day the whole thing has a calm, almost meditative quality. It's a working landscape - you'll see fishermen dotted along the banks, waterfowl making use of the shallows, and plenty of space to just stand and look about.

Walkers will find the most here. There are paths that take you all the way round, though the full circuit isn't short, and the muddy bits can catch you out after rain. The water itself doesn't have much drama to it - no rowing clubs or water sports - which means it stays peaceful and quiet. Families with younger children might find a half-hour enough to see the ducks and move on, but if you've got energetic kids happy to walk a couple of miles, it's a solid afternoon out.

Access is free as part of Tatton Park itself, and there's generous car parking. Go early on weekends or midweek if you can - the place gets proper busy with locals who know the value of it. Spring and early summer are best, before the crowds arrive. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Royal Vale, Pickmere Leisure, or Sycamore Farm are all within five miles - this is an obvious short drive for a proper stretch of the legs without needing to venture far.
