Tatlocks Hillock

The walk up Tatlocks Hillock from Skelmersdale is proper steep for what amounts to a modest Lancashire peak, but that's half the appeal. You're climbing moorland that feels properly remote despite being minutes from town, and the views across the West Pennines make the huffing worthwhile.

It's not a dramatic summit - no dramatic rock formations or fell-top café - but there's something satisfying about reaching the top and knowing you've earned it. The landscape opens up considerably from up here, rolling away towards the moorland proper. On a clear day you can see a good stretch of Lancashire unfold below.

Don't come expecting dramatic Alpine vibes. Come instead if you want a proper leg-stretcher without needing hours or technical kit. The moorland flora changes through the seasons, which matters if you're into that sort of thing. The path itself is well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, though it can be boggy after rain.

Allow ninety minutes for the round trip if you're not dawdling, less if you're fit. It works brilliantly as a half-day activity alongside a stay at The Secret Garden Glamping - just four miles down the road - or combined with exploring the wider moorland network in the area. Solo walkers, families with kids old enough for a proper climb, and anyone after a quick hit of elevation without the faffing about will find it worth the effort. Winter's quieter up here, spring's when the moorland comes alive.
