Tarring Park

Tarring Park is a proper working nature reserve just outside Worthing, where you can actually see Sussex wildlife going about its business rather than gawping at it through glass. The reserve protects a stretch of wetland and woodland that's genuinely wild - no manicured paths, no cafe selling artisan coffee, just reeds, water, and birds that couldn't care less you're there.

You'll spot herons, sometimes egrets if you're lucky, and in winter the place fills with visiting wildfowl. The walking is straightforward enough, though you need decent boots if there's been rain - the ground gets boggy fast. Allow a couple of hours to do it justice, longer if you're a serious birdwatcher. Go early morning or dusk in spring and autumn for the best sightings. Summer can feel a bit flat once the breeding season wraps up.

Historywise, there's not much to write home about, but that's sort of the point. It's conservation-focused, not interpretation-heavy. Families with children old enough to understand that boring equals authentic will get something from it. Impatient kids wanting excitement will be bored within twenty minutes.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks near Worthing - Onslow or Brook Lane are closest - Tarring Park makes a solid morning walk before heading to the seafront. It's free, it's accessible, and it genuinely matters for local wildlife. Worth the detour if you like real nature, not the sanitised version.
