About Highdown Hill

Standing at 267 metres above the West Sussex coast, this chalk downland summit delivers sweeping views across the Channel to the Isle of Wight on clear days. The walk up from Worthing takes about 45 minutes through classic South Downs scenery - rolling grassland peppered with hawthorn and gorse. Once at the top, you'll find Miller's Tomb, an 18th-century folly that adds a touch of mystery to proceedings. The panorama stretches from Brighton in the east to Portsmouth in the west, making it one of the finest vantage points along this stretch of coast. Families with older children will manage the climb easily enough, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections near the summit. Dog walkers love it here - plenty of space for four-legged friends to roam. The wind can be fierce up top, so pack layers even on warm days. Free parking is available at the bottom of Highdown Rise, and there's no admission fee for what is essentially a proper countryside ramble with spectacular payoff. Allow two to three hours for the round trip if you want to properly soak up those views. If you're staying at South Downs Caravan Park, this makes an excellent morning expedition before the day heats up. The nearby Fox Wood Campsite and Brook Lane Caravan Park are also well-positioned for tackling this rewarding climb.
