About Tarn Crag (Wainwright)

The walk up Tarn Crag barely registers on most Lake District itineraries, which is precisely why you should go. It's a proper fell - not huge, but with enough grunt to feel rewarding without requiring fell-running fitness. From Ambleside, you're looking at a couple of hours round trip, depending on which route you take, and the views across the Langdale Valley and towards the Pikes are genuinely excellent.

The tarn itself sits in a little bowl near the summit, dark and still on a calm day. It's the kind of place where you realise why Wainwright was so obsessed with these fells - there's something about the scale that feels just right. Not towering dramatically above you, just companionable somehow.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's straightforward enough for experienced hikers wanting something less crowded than Catbells or Helvellyn, but the path can be boggy in patches and there's a bit of scrambling near the top, so it's not a gentle stroll. Kids who've done a few fells will be fine. Those expecting a cafe at the summit will be disappointed.

Tarn Crag works brilliantly if you're based at Great Langdale Glamping or the main campsite - literally on your doorstep. You can knock it out before lunch and still have the afternoon free for messing about in Langdale proper. Free to climb, of course. Go midweek if you can stomach the weather gamble.
