Talargoch Mine Old Level Shaft V

The old mine shaft at Talargoch is one of those places that rewards the curious more than the casual visitor. You're looking at the remnants of industrial Wales - specifically a slate mining operation that's been clawed back by the landscape. It's genuinely atmospheric if you know what you're standing at, though there's not much in the way of interpretation on site, so do your homework first.

Walkers and industrial archaeology types will get the most from it. The shaft itself is the main draw - seeing where men actually worked, hundreds of feet down in darkness. It's a sobering reminder of what that labour entailed. The setting, up in the Conwy hills near Rhyl, is genuinely wild and windswept. Bring a decent camera if you're into that sort of thing.

There's no visitor centre or facilities here - it's just you and the landscape. That's either brilliant or a bit disappointing depending on your mood. It's free to access, though you'll need to be reasonably mobile to get up to it. Allow an hour including the walk from the car park, maybe longer if you're photographing or really studying the site.

If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Golden Sands is the closest at under five miles - this works as a solid morning out between beach days. It's the kind of detour that makes a break feel less formulaic, though don't expect crowds or visitor amenities. Bring a packed lunch and waterproofs.
