Talargoch Lead Mine - Panton Vein Walker's Shaft

You'll find the entrance to Walker's Shaft tucked into the hillside near Rhyl, and it's one of those places that stops you dead. This is proper industrial archaeology - a working lead mine shaft from the 18th century that tells you everything about how Wales fed the world's demand for metal. The Panton Vein was where the richest seams ran, and miners hacked away at rock face by candlelight for months on end. What you see now is the collapsed remains of the shaft infrastructure, but the landscape itself is the story.

Walkers and history types will get the most from this. It's not a visitor centre with explanations - you need to piece together what you're looking at, which makes it infinitely more interesting than something packaged. The walk to reach it is scenic enough, and the views back towards Conwy are worth the climb alone. Allow an hour, maybe longer if you're into industrial heritage. Go in dry weather because the approach can be boggy.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Golden Sands is closest at under five miles - this works as a morning excursion before heading somewhere livelier. The Golden Gate and Parkdean Resorts sites are within striking distance too. It won't keep families with young kids entertained for long, but teenagers who've done the usual theme park circuit might actually find it atmospheric. Just don't expect facilities or interpretation boards.
