T25 Cairn

A Bronze Age cairn sitting alone on the Derbyshire moorland, T25 is genuinely prehistoric - roughly 4,000 years old, give or take a century. You'll find it roughly three miles from Matlock, a proper remote spot that requires a decent walk across open ground. The cairn itself is a pile of stones, honestly, but once you're standing next to it, staring at what someone built millennia ago, it hits differently. The views across the moorland are outstanding - wide, empty, the kind of landscape that hasn't changed much since bronze tools did the work.

It's a walker's destination rather than a family afternoon out. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at - you bring your own knowledge or none at all. Some people find that brilliant. Others might prefer somewhere with a bit more infrastructure. Admission is free, naturally enough, being a Bronze Age heap on public moorland.

The walk to reach it takes around 40 minutes from the nearest access point, so factor in at least two hours to do it properly and not feel rushed. Go on a clear day if you can - the visibility matters here, and you'll want decent boots. If you're staying at Newhaven Holiday Park or Lickpenny Matlock, you've got the perfect base for this kind of moorland wandering. It's the sort of thing that works as a half-day excursion, combined with other walks in the area rather than a destination in itself.
