Sykes Lane Green

The footpath through Sykes Lane Green takes you into proper wetland country just outside Newark - boggy, reedy, and brilliantly alive with dragonflies and water birds if you time it right. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction, so there are no café facilities or information boards, just a quiet strip of reed beds and open water that locals have clearly cherished for years.

You'll spot great crested grebes here, and if you're lucky, marsh harriers quartering over the reeds. The walk itself is straightforward enough, though your boots will know about it after rain - bring proper footwear. The whole thing takes maybe forty minutes at a gentle pace, longer if you've got binoculars and patience.

Birders and nature photographers will get genuine value from this. Families with young kids might find it a bit dull after the first ten minutes unless they're already into spotting birds. Spring and early autumn work best when migration brings variety, though winter can be quiet.

It works well as a morning outing if you're based at Trentfield Farm nearby - combines easily with a potter around Newark's town centre or a longer walk elsewhere in the area.
