Swinging Chairs

Two weathered metal seats dangle from chains on the clifftop near Clacton-on-Sea, creating what locals simply call the Swinging Chairs. It's exactly what it sounds like - a pair of old-fashioned swing seats facing out to sea, though the view they frame is spectacular.

Families with young children absolutely love this spot. The swings are sturdy enough for adults but positioned perfectly for kids to feel like they're flying over the water. On clear days, you can spot ships heading to and from Harwich in the distance. The surrounding grassland makes for a lovely picnic spot too.

Getting there involves a proper walk along the coastal path, so it's not suitable for pushchairs or anyone with mobility issues. The clifftop can be blustery - bring layers even on warm days. Most visitors spend about half an hour here, though kids often want longer.

This works brilliantly as part of a longer coastal walk if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Valley Farm or Highfield Grange. The chairs sit roughly halfway between Clacton and St Osyth, making them an ideal stopping point for families exploring the Essex coast. Nothing fancy, but sometimes the simplest pleasures are the best - especially when they come with sea views and the sound of waves below.
