Swine's Back

The walk up to Swine's Back near Buxton is steep, relentless, and absolutely worth doing on a clear day. This limestone peak doesn't have the fame of some of its Derbyshire neighbours, which means you'll often find it quieter than you'd expect. The summit itself is modest - you're not scrambling rock or navigating exposed ridges - but the view south across the Peak District really opens up once you've crested the top.

Historia enthusiasts might be underwhelmed by what's actually on the summit, but walkers after a solid morning's exercise will find it rewarding. This isn't a destination for small children or anyone looking for a gentle amble. Families staying at Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, just over five miles away, could include this as part of a bigger Peak District walking break, pairing it with easier routes on other days.

Go early if you can. The car park fills up during weekends, and the walk's best in morning light. Bring proper boots - the path's muddy and loose in sections - and check the weather forecast first.
