Fox Low

Fox Low is a modest peak just outside Buxton that won't take your breath away - but it will give you a proper walk and some decent views across the White Peak if you time it right. It's the sort of place locals know and visitors often walk straight past without noticing, which is partly its charm.

The walk itself is straightforward enough, ranging from 3 to 5 miles depending on your route. You're not tackling anything dramatic - the summit sits at around 1,500 feet - but the moorland terrain can be boggy underfoot after rain, so proper boots matter. On a clear day, the views fan out across the limestone plateau towards Axe Edge and beyond. On a grey one, you get mist and solitude, which some people prefer.

This works best for walkers who've rented a base near Buxton and want something less crowded than Mam Tor or Chrome Hill. Families with young legs will find it manageable, though it's not thrilling enough to hold attention for the whole afternoon. If you're staying at Lime Tree Holiday Park or the Buxton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby, you could knock this out in a morning and still have time for a proper pub lunch in Buxton itself.

There's nothing here - no facilities, no café, no visitor centre - so bring what you need. It's free to access, which is the only thing going entirely in its favour. Worth a detour if you're already in the area and the weather's cooperating. Otherwise, save your energy for the bigger draws nearby.
