The Swindon & Cricklade Railway pulls you back about fifty years the moment you arrive at Hayes Knoll Station. This is a proper heritage line - volunteers have spent decades restoring the track and locomotives, and you can feel that labour of love in every detail. The station itself is a period piece: Victorian ironwork, original signage, and a small heritage museum that explains what you're looking at without being tedious about it.

You board vintage carriages pulled by steam or diesel engines depending on the day, and the line meanders through Wiltshire countryside towards Cricklade - about forty minutes of gentle, slow-motion travel. It's oddly meditative. There's no rushing, no announcements about your connection. Just fields, trees, and the rhythmic clunk of the train.

This works best for anyone with a soft spot for railway history and mechanical things generally. Families with kids who like trains will get an hour out of it; grown-ups who remember steam trains might get properly sentimental. You won't do much more than the journey itself, though the station cafe does decent tea.
