Swim Dog

A bronze dog forever frozen mid-paddle in the shallows - that's Swim Dog, Newquay's most wonderfully odd little landmark. You'll find it down by the water's edge, a life-sized sculpture that's become something of a local mascot, catching the attention of every passerby who wanders past.

It's the sort of thing that takes thirty seconds to see properly, but it somehow stays with you. The detail is impressive - you can make out the dog's expression, the water lapping around it - and there's genuine charm in its simplicity. It works as a photo stop, naturally, and kids seem to get a kick out of spotting it.

The sculpture sits right on Newquay's waterfront, so it's best combined with a proper wander around the town rather than treated as a destination in itself. No admission fee, no opening hours to worry about - it's just there. Go at any time of day, though late afternoon light catches it beautifully. Realistically, allow five minutes maximum, but couple it with a stroll through Newquay's town centre and you've got yourself a proper afternoon out.
