Swanton's Covert

You'll find yourself walking through proper old-growth woodland about three miles out from Salisbury, where Swanton's Covert sits as one of those quiet corners locals know about and visitors somehow miss. It's ancient broadleaf forest - the kind with decent-sized oaks and beeches that actually make you feel small - and the floor is thick enough with leaf litter that you'll barely hear your own footsteps.

The main draw here is simply walking. There are paths threading through, nothing too demanding, and in autumn the light filters through in those golden-brown ways that make you understand why people get romantic about English woodlands. Spring's decent too if you like bluebells. A couple of hours is about right unless you're the type who sits on logs and thinks about mortality.

Historically it's been managed woodland for centuries, which means the structure's actually quite deliberate rather than wild - rows of mature trees with space between them. That makes it feel orderly without being oppressive. You could easily combine it with a walk across the adjacent fields towards the Avon if you're after something longer.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit thin on attractions - there's no playground or tea shed, just trees and paths. But older children who like exploring and spotting things will get on with it fine. Free to access as far as anyone can tell, and you can park near the entrance without fuss.

Stay at Salisbury Camping and Caravanning Club Site just a few miles away and you've got solid base for exploring both the forest and the cathedral town itself.
