Bishopstone Down

The walk up Bishopstone Down rewards you with views across the Wiltshire chalklands that stretch for miles - proper countryside, the kind where you can actually see the curve of the land. It's a straightforward walk from the village of Bishopstone, just a few miles south of Salisbury, and takes about forty minutes to the top if you're not dawdling.

This isn't a dramatic peak. What makes it worth the effort is the sense of being genuinely out there, away from the tourist trails that clog up Stonehenge and Old Sarum. The downland grass keeps the wind honest, and on a clear day the views work their way into your bones. The walk itself is accessible enough for reasonably fit families, though it's steep enough in places to make small legs complain a bit.

Historically minded visitors might appreciate that you're walking ancient trackways - this corner of Wiltshire is thick with Bronze Age burial mounds and prehistoric remains, though the down itself is more about the landscape than any single monument. Bring decent boots if you've had rain, as chalk mud is slippery.

If you're camped at Coombe Caravan Park - just a couple of miles away - or staying at Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm, this makes an excellent half-day excursion. Leave the car in Bishopstone village and walk from there. It's free, takes roughly two hours all in, and genuinely clears the head. Go early or late to avoid the midday glare off the chalk.
