Swanshett Coppice

Walking into Swanshett Coppice feels like stepping back into proper woodland Hampshire - all ancient oaks, tangled undergrowth, and the sort of quiet that makes you actually notice birdsong. It's a working coppice woodland, which means the trees have been coppiced (that's cut down to ground level and left to regrow) for centuries, creating this distinctive landscape of multiple stems growing from single roots.

The woodland itself is relatively compact but rewarding. You get decent woodland walks without needing to commit an entire day - an hour to ninety minutes covers most of what's worth seeing. The ground can be muddy depending on recent rainfall, so proper boots are wise rather than optional. There's something satisfying about walking through a landscape that's been actively managed for hundreds of years; it feels less "nature reserve" and more "actual working forest."

It works well for families with older kids who don't mind a bit of mud and can handle uneven terrain. Younger children might lose interest quickly unless they're the type to spend hours building dens and looking for bugs. The coppice is genuinely quiet - hardly anyone uses it - which is either a major plus or means you're doing something wrong and should be at somewhere busier.

Alton's just down the road, which makes this doable as a half-day walk if you're staying at Wigwam Holidays or other local spots. Combine it with a proper walk somewhere larger if you want to make a full day of it. Free to access, no facilities to speak of, and best visited when it's not waterlogged.
