Fir Hill

The walk up Fir Hill rewards you with one of Surrey's better viewpoints, even if the summit itself won't exactly leave you breathless. It's a proper little climb from Alton - nothing brutal, but enough to feel like you've earned the vista across the Weald. The fir trees give way near the top, and on a clear day you can pick out the South Downs rolling away to the south. Most people manage it in under an hour from the car park.

Walkers will get the most from this one. Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a slog without much to do once you're up there - no cafe, no facilities, just views and fresh air. If your crew is into spotting landmarks and stretching their legs, fair play. Otherwise you're looking at a fairly short outing.

There's no charge for the walk itself, and it fits nicely into a park holiday in the area. Feather Down Manor Farm sits just 3 miles away and makes a solid base for exploring Surrey's walking routes. If you're staying at Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat or Wigwam Holidays - both within 6 miles - you can knock this off as a morning jaunt before heading back for lunch. It's not a day-long adventure, but it's a decent way to get some elevation and views without disappearing into the countryside for half the day.
