Broxhead Common

You won't find crowds at Broxhead Common, which is precisely why it's worth the drive from Alton. This sprawling heathland opens up with proper views across Surrey's High Weald - the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people actually move here rather than just pass through.

It's a walker's terrain rather than a tourist trap. The common itself is fairly exposed, which means the wind can bite, but on a clear day you get genuine distance across the ridges. Most people allow two to three hours here, though you could happily spend half a day if you've got the legs for it. There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of - bring water, bring a map if you're not confident with navigation, and wear proper boots because the ground gets boggy.

Families with older kids will get on fine here; the younger ones might flag after an hour of tramping through heather. History types will appreciate that common land like this shaped the entire region - it's working landscape rather than museum piece.

If you're staying at Feather Down Manor Farm or Tilford Woods just down the road, this makes an excellent morning or afternoon circuit without driving far. The combination of proper outdoor walking and genuine peace makes it worthwhile even if the weather's so-so. Don't expect manicured paths or interpretation boards - this is the real thing.
