Swanpool Beach

The stretch of sand at Swanpool, just outside Truro, is one of those Cornish beaches that doesn't need a car park the size of a supermarket to prove its worth. It's a proper crescent of golden sand backed by dunes, sheltered enough that even when the wind's up elsewhere, you'll find a pocket of calm here. The beach shelves gradually, so it's genuinely good for families with younger kids who want to splash about without getting out of their depth immediately.

What makes it work is the lack of fuss. There's a car park, facilities are basic but adequate, and it never feels rammed even in peak season - you can actually find space to lay a towel without sitting on someone's sandcastle. The rock pools at either end reward a bit of exploration, and the dunes are worth a wander if the weather's decent. Swimmers will appreciate that it faces the right direction for a decent swell, though it's not a serious break by Cornish standards.

Allow two to three hours if you're combining it with lunch nearby in Truro. Come in shoulder season - April or September - and you'll have the place largely to yourself. From any of the nearby parks like Trethem Mill or Stay Wild, you're looking at a fifteen-minute drive, making it an easy half-day trip that won't eat into your holiday schedule. It won't blow your mind, but it's honest work from a beach, and locals know its value.
