Sutton's Covert

Sutton's Covert is a proper woodland walk just outside Southport, the sort of place locals know about but visitors often miss. It's not dramatic or anything - no dramatic cliff edges or alpine views - but it's a genuine bit of Lancashire greenery where you can actually breathe without smelling the sea.

The woodland itself is managed well enough. You get decent footpaths threading through mature trees, mostly beech and oak, and it's the kind of spot where you might actually see something wildlife-wise if you're quiet about it. Bring binoculars and you've got a decent morning sorting birds. The canopy filters the light nicely on sunny days, and after rain it smells how forests should.

This is walker territory, full stop. Kids will get bored after forty minutes unless they're the type who collect leaves and spot squirrels. If that's your crew, they'll be fine. It's free access as far as I can tell - no gates, no visitors' centre, just park near Southport and walk in.

Allow an hour for a proper loop. You won't need much longer. The real benefit is proximity to Riverside Holiday Park and Four Seasons Glamping - both within striking distance if you're based at one of the caravan sites. It breaks up a coastal park holiday nicely, especially if the weather's turned damp and you fancy something different from the beach. Not essential, but solid backup plan.
