Bobbiner's Wood

You'll find yourself walking into proper woodland proper quickly once you leave Southport's outskirts. Bobbiner's Wood is the sort of place locals know about and tourists mostly miss - a genuine forest where the trees do the talking rather than a manicured park with benches every fifty metres.

It's ideal for a proper woodland walk without needing to drive an hour into the Lake District. The paths wind through decent-sized trees, and on a grey Lancashire day it feels genuinely peaceful. You can lose an hour here easily, longer if you're the type to stop and actually look at things. Walkers will get the most from it; the terrain is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes.

No visitor centre, no café, no admission charge that we can find - just a wood that gets on with being a wood. Go early if you can to avoid the dog walkers and joggers who've cottoned onto it. Late afternoon light filters through the canopy properly in summer. The nearest caravan parks - Riverside Holiday Park is barely a mile away - make this a solid half-day activity when you're based nearby. Pair it with a stroll around Southport's seafront and you've got a decent day mapped out.

Worth the trip if you're already in the area and fancy getting under some trees. Don't expect anything wild or Instagram-worthy. Just honest woodland.
