Sutton on Sea Free Evangelical Church

The Free Evangelical Church sits quietly on Sutton on Sea's modest high street, a red-brick Victorian structure that most visitors to this Lincolnshire coastal town would pass without a second glance. Step inside, though, and you'll find yourself in a perfectly preserved snapshot of late 19th-century nonconformist worship - original pews, a proper organ, and the sort of austere simplicity that defines Independent chapels of that era.

It's not a showstopper attraction, to be honest. You're looking at twenty minutes maximum to have a proper look around, and that's only if you linger over the hymn books and read the historical notices. But if you're into Victorian religious architecture or the social history of East Coast seaside towns, it's genuinely worth a visit. The congregation still meets here, so check ahead before turning up - you won't want to blunder in mid-service.

For families staying at any of the nearby caravan parks - Seacroft is barely half a mile away, and both the Mablethorpe Camping and Caravanning Club Site and Sutton-on-Sea Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite are close by - this makes a reasonable rainy-day detour when the beach gets grey. Mablethorpe itself, just north, has the usual seaside bits: arcades, fish and chips, promenade. The church slots neatly into a morning's wandering before lunch.

Free admission, almost certainly, though do ring ahead or ask at the Mablethorpe tourist information if it's open to casual visitors. Don't expect modern facilities or lengthy explanations - this is the real thing, not a heritage attraction.
