The Lion Pillar

Standing 16 feet tall beside the main road into Sutton-on-Sea, this striking white pillar topped with a golden lion catches many visitors off guard. Built in 1845 as a navigation aid for ships along this treacherous stretch of Lincolnshire coast, it served mariners for decades before modern technology made it redundant.

History buffs will appreciate the story behind this unusual landmark - originally one of several such markers that helped guide vessels safely past the notorious sandbanks off Mablethorpe. The lion itself is a replacement; storms and salt air claimed the original years ago.

There's not much to actually do here beyond taking a photo and reading the small information plaque. Most people stop for five minutes, snap a picture, and move on. Kids might enjoy the novelty, but it's hardly a destination in itself.

What makes it worthwhile is the context - you're looking at a piece of maritime heritage that speaks to the dangers these waters once posed. Combined with a walk along nearby Sutton beach or a trip into Mablethorpe proper, it adds a nice historical footnote to a coastal break. The pillar sits right on the route between several holiday parks including Haven Golden Sands and the various sites around Sutton-on-Sea, making it an easy detour rather than a special journey.
