Sutton Lakes

Two shallow lakes surrounded by woodland just outside Sevenoaks - the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a day around. The water's lined with reeds and you get decent views across both lakes if you walk the perimeter path, which takes a solid hour depending on pace.

It's genuinely good for a quieter morning walk, especially if you're staying at Thriftwood Country Park nearby. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile - herons, grebes, and wildfowl use the lakes regularly. Families with young kids won't necessarily be gripped unless they're into spotting ducks, but older walkers and anyone wanting a gentle leg-stretch while on a Kent holiday will find it pleasant enough.

The main thing to manage expectations on: there's no café, no facilities to speak of, and the paths can get muddy after rain. Go early or late in the day if you want peace - it's popular with local dog walkers at weekends. Spring and early autumn are best for birdlife, but it's accessible year-round.

Take it as part of a wider Sevenoaks exploration rather than a destination in itself. The lakes sit reasonably central to other walks in the area, so combine it with a poke around the town or a longer ramble if you're got a full day to kill. Worth an hour if you're staying in the region, forgettable if you're making a special trip.
