Surrey Hills National Landscape

The Surrey Hills stretch across a proper swathe of the South East, running south from Dorking towards Tadworth and beyond. This isn't one attraction you tick off - it's a landscape you walk through, drive across, and return to. Rolling chalk downs, beech woodlands, and sudden views that make you pull over. The terrain changes constantly. One minute you're in thick forest, the next on open downland with views towards the Weald.

Walkers get the most from this. There are decent paths lacing through - Box Hill is the obvious one, but the quieter ridges between Brockham and Betchworth offer just as much appeal without the crowds. Cyclists will find it challenging; the hills are genuine. Families with young kids might find some sections too steep, though the gentler northern slopes near Tadworth work fine for shorter legs.

There's no entrance fee because it's a landscape, not a ticketed site. You can spend an hour or most of a day here depending on energy and interest. Spring's excellent for bluebells in the woods; summer gets busy with weekenders. Autumn probably wins for light and fewer people.

Staying nearby gives real advantage. Betchworth Fort Park, Merrywood, and Surrey Hills Park sit right in it, letting you walk straight out at dawn. Norbury Park is solid too - woodland walks without needing to drive. Even camping options like Surrey Hills Yurts put you properly embedded in the terrain rather than visiting as an afterthought from somewhere else.
