Sugarloaf Hill

The walk up Sugarloaf Hill takes about twenty minutes from the Folkestone side, and the views across the Channel on a clear day are genuinely worth the effort. It's a proper little peak for Kent - nothing dramatic, but the perspective you get over the town and out towards France changes how you see the whole area. The summit isn't dramatic or particularly high, but walkers will find it a satisfying route that doesn't demand serious fitness. The real appeal is the payoff at the top. Children tend to enjoy it as a achievable goal, though under-fives might need carrying for the steeper bits. Go midweek or early morning if you want relative peace - weekends bring hikers from across the region. The nearest car parks are on the outskirts of Folkestone itself, which is handy if you're staying at Varne Ridge Holiday Park or Black Horse Farm Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, both within a couple of miles. Greenhill Glamping and Hawthorne Trench Campsite a bit further out still make reasonable bases for a visit. There's no cafe at the summit - take a flask and a snack. Admission is free, and you can do the whole thing in under an hour including the walk back. Best visited in spring or autumn when the Channel haze lifts and you can actually see the French coast. Winter can be muddy underfoot, and summer crowds make the narrow paths feel a bit congested. If you're planning a parks holiday in the area, this fits nicely as a morning outing before settling in at your campsite.
