Stub Coppice

Stub Coppice is a proper woodland walk just outside Chippenham - the sort of place you'll find locals rather than tour groups. It's a working coppice woodland, which means the trees have been managed and cut for centuries, creating this layered canopy that's genuinely lovely in spring and early summer when the bluebells come through.

What you get here is straightforward: woodland paths threading through mixed broadleaf trees, plenty of shade, and enough space to let kids run about without losing sight of them. It's not dramatic or showy. There are no visitor facilities, no car park to speak of, no café. You turn up, walk around, and that's it. The paths are well-trodden but can be muddy after rain, so proper boots matter.

This suits families wanting an hour or two of green space without the circus of a proper country estate, and walkers who appreciate working woodland over manicured forestry. It's the kind of place you'd visit while staying at one of the local caravan parks like Piccadilly Caravan Park or Devizes Camping and Caravanning Club Site, both within a couple of miles. Good for stretching legs between touring or as a morning break if you're based in the area.

Free access, no time limit - you're essentially walking on land that belongs to someone, so respect that. Give it an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're in no hurry. Spring's genuinely worth timing your visit for, though it's workable any time the weather's decent.
