Horace Slughorn's House (Private Residence)

Right, so this is a private residence near Chippenham - not actually open to the public, which rather limits what you can do with it. If you're a serious Harry Potter fan, it's the real-world house that inspired Horace Slughorn's character, and spotting it from the road scratches a particular itch. But let's be honest: you're looking at the exterior from a distance, taking a photo, and moving on. Twenty minutes maximum.

It works as a diversion if you're already in the area - perhaps based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Piccadilly (practically on the doorstep) or Devizes Camping and Caravanning Club Site a few miles out. Wiltshire has plenty to occupy you properly though - Stonehenge is close by, and the market town of Chippenham itself has enough Georgian architecture and riverside walks to fill an afternoon without bothering a private home.

The reality is this appeals almost exclusively to Potter completists. If you're travelling with kids obsessed with the films and books, it might warrant a brief stop. Everyone else should save their petrol and spend time at somewhere actually worth visiting - the various prehistoric sites dotted across Wiltshire, for instance, are far more rewarding. The house itself sits on private land, so respect that and don't trespass. A quick drive-by from the road is the only option.
