Stroan Loch

The water at Stroan Loch sits dark and still, ringed by low hills that rise gradually from the shoreline. It's a modest Scottish loch - nothing dramatic, but genuinely peaceful in a way that larger tourist magnets rarely manage.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which actually works in its favour. You can walk the perimeter, and the paths are manageable without being a serious trek. The loch itself is small enough that you won't get lost, which makes it ideal if you've got restless kids in tow - they can run off steam without you losing sight of them for miles.

Birders rate it highly. The water draws in grebes, ducks and the occasional osprey if you time it right. Bring binoculars and you might spot something decent. Even without specialist interest, the light on the water in late afternoon is worth the journey from Castle Douglas, which sits just a few miles away.

It works brilliantly as a half-hour stop if you're based at Loch Ken Holiday Park nearby. That's a proper base for exploring the area, and Stroan sits close enough to break up a rainy afternoon. Allow an hour if you fancy a walk, less if you just want to stretch your legs and take in the view. Go early morning or late evening when the crowds thin out - which is to say, when the place empties almost entirely.

Free to visit and genuinely quiet. That's the appeal here.
