Strip Plantation

The trees here are planted in neat, military rows - proper geometric stuff that looks almost alien when you first spot it from above. Strip Plantation is a working forest just outside Castle Douglas, the sort of place where you can lose an hour without realising and come out feeling properly clearheaded. The paths wind through dense conifers, and it's genuinely dark under the canopy even on bright days. Good for walkers after something low-key without the uphill slog of proper mountain terrain. If you've got kids, they'll either love the expedition feel or get restless after thirty minutes depending on their age and how interesting they find fungi and bird calls. The plantation sits bang in the middle of Dumfries & Galloway's forest country, so it works well as a morning or afternoon stop between Loch Ken Holiday Park and Galloway Glamping if you're basing yourself in the area for a week. The walks are straightforward enough - no scrambling - and you won't need specialist kit. Ground gets boggy after rain, mind you. There's a certain eerie beauty to the regimented rows, especially when mist rolls through. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but that's precisely why it feels real. Free to access, as far as we can tell, though facilities are minimal. Best visited during drier months when the paths aren't turning into mud slides.
