Strathspey Railway - Aviemore Station

The smell of coal smoke and hot steam hits you before you round the corner into Aviemore Station - that authentic whiff of a working heritage railway that's been running since the 1960s. The Strathspey Railway runs vintage trains through the Scottish Highlands, mostly between Aviemore and Broomhill, and it's genuinely brilliant if you're after something different from the usual park-based holiday.

You'll spend anywhere from two to four hours here depending on whether you just watch the trains or actually ride one. The coaches are proper period pieces - some dating back decades - and you get decent views of the Cairngorms as the line winds through the glens. Kids absolutely eat this up, especially if they're anywhere near train-obsessed. Adults tend to enjoy the nostalgia and the mechanics of watching heritage volunteers actually keep these things running.

It's worth checking ahead for opening dates and train schedules, as the line doesn't run year-round. Admission costs a bit - you pay for the experience - but the ride itself is the draw, not some gift shop experience. It's a proper railway, run by proper railway enthusiasts.

If you're staying at Highland Glen Holiday Park, just half a mile away, this is an obvious half-day trip. Even from Dalraddy, three miles out, it's close enough for an afternoon. Pairs well with walking in the Cairngorms or heading into Aviemore itself for lunch, but on its own merits it's solid entertainment rather than a long-haul detour.
