Creag na h-Iolaire

The walk up Creag na h-Iolaire from Aviemore is a proper hill rather than a mountain - steep enough to feel like an achievement, short enough that you won't regret starting. The name means Eagle's Crag in Gaelic, though spotting actual eagles requires patience and luck. What you get instead is a solid viewpoint over Strathspey, the Cairngorms looming across the valley, and on a clear day enough perspective to understand why this corner of the Highlands draws people back year after year.

It's maybe ninety minutes up and back if you're not dawdling, though the path gets rocky toward the top and demands proper boots. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the steepness. The real value here isn't a dramatic summit - it's the walk itself. You're threading through native pine woodland at the start, then climbing into open moorland where the views expand with every few metres of height gained.

Free to walk, obviously. Go on a clear day or don't bother - the cloud settles in fast up here and renders the whole thing pointless. Early morning or late afternoon light makes the effort worthwhile.
