Strangford and Lecale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The Strangford and Lecale landscape is one of those rare stretches of Northern Ireland where you genuinely understand why it earned protected status. Rolling drumlins tumble down to the shores of Strangford Lough, a massive tidal inlet that's essentially a nature reserve with water views that shift dramatically between high and low tide. The whole area sprawls across peninsulas and quiet country roads south of Downpatrick, and it's the kind of place where you can spend an afternoon without seeing another soul.

Walkers get the most from it. The coastal paths offer proper views - granite cliffs, salt marshes, and on clear days you can see right across to the Mourne Mountains inland. There's no single entrance fee or visitor centre to speak of; you simply park up in one of the various laybys and explore on foot. Bird watchers should arrive armed with binoculars and patience - the lough is significant for overwintering wildfowl. The terrain is manageable rather than demanding, making it suitable for families who don't mind a moderate trudge.

It's ideal caravan territory. Base yourself at Delamont Country Park just 2.1 miles away and you've got immediate access to walking trails and water views without the strain of a full day's drive. Castle Ward Caravan Park sits even closer to some of the better coastal stretches. Spring and autumn work best - summer crowds thin out, and the light hits differently. Allow a full morning minimum, ideally longer if you're serious about exploring the quieter reaches of the lough.
