Killyleagh Castle

The first thing that strikes you about Killyleagh is how properly medieval it looks - all turrets and battlements rising from the county Down landscape like something out of a storybook. It's one of Ireland's oldest castles, and the locals take that seriously. You're looking at a genuine Norman fortress that's been continuously occupied since the 12th century, which means it's not some hollow ruin but an actual working home with real weight to it.

The castle sits right on the shore of Strangford Lough, and that's half the appeal. The views across the water are genuinely lovely, especially on a clear day when you can see right across to the Mourne Mountains. Most visits involve a walk around the exterior and grounds rather than touring the interior, which is perfectly fine - the building itself is the main event here.

It's worth allowing an hour to properly look around and soak it in. The approach from Downpatrick takes about fifteen minutes, making it an easy half-day addition to a wider tour of the area. Families with kids tend to get the most from it, particularly those aged six upwards who actually care about castles rather than just running about. History types will appreciate the genuine age and the continuous occupation angle.

If you're based at Delamont Country Park just down the road, this is absolutely on your doorstep - barely a ten-minute drive. It pairs well with Castle Ward a few miles further on if you're doing a castle crawl through the area. Do check opening times and admission before you visit though, as these can shift seasonally.
