Shane's Lough

Shane's Lough sits just outside Downpatrick, a proper freshwater lake that locals know far better than most visitors bothering to drive down from Belfast. The water's calm most days, reflecting whatever sky you get - which in Northern Ireland could be anything from brilliant blue to heavy grey within the hour.

It's a walker's spot rather than a destination in itself. The shoreline's gentle enough for families with younger kids, though there's not much in the way of facilities or formal paths, so come prepared. Birdwatchers do well here; you'll see mallards and the occasional heron if you're patient. The real draw is the quietness. You won't fight crowds for a bench.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Delamont's excellent if you can get in there - Shane's Lough works as a morning walk before heading somewhere with more to do. Downpatrick itself has the cathedral and some decent pubs, and you're reasonably close to Castle Ward if the weather turns and you need an indoor option.

Allow an hour or so if you're taking it seriously with binoculars. Kids might get restless after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely into nature. Go early morning for the best light and fewest people. It costs nothing, which at least means you haven't wasted money if it doesn't grab you.
