Strancleuch Hill

The walk up Strancleuch Hill takes roughly an hour from the Biggar side, and honestly, it's worth every minute. You're climbing just 1,400-odd metres of moorland, so nothing dramatic, but the views across the Lowlands open up properly once you crest the top. On a clear day you can see for miles - proper expansive stuff across the rolling countryside.

It's the sort of walk that suits families with older kids and anyone after a straightforward afternoon outing without the scrambling nonsense. The path's well-trodden, manageable underfoot, though it can get boggy after rain, so decent boots matter. Locals use it regularly, which means you won't feel like you're heading somewhere uncharted. The moorland landscape itself is the real draw here - no dramatic crags, no ruins, just you and the Lowland hills.

Biggar's your nearest proper town, only a few miles away, which makes this an easy addition to a longer South Lanarkshire break. If you're based at Mount View Caravan Park nearby, it's an ideal morning or afternoon walk without needing to drive far. Allow two hours for a leisurely round trip including time at the top to sit about and soak in the view. Bring a wind-proof jacket - it can get brisk up there even when it's calm down below.
