Straith Monument

The Straith Monument stands alone on the Highland landscape near Nairn, a solitary stone marker commemorating a moment most visitors know little about. It's a straightforward pillar of the kind you stumble upon if you're properly exploring the backroads rather than sticking to the main tourist trail.

What you get here is exactly that - a monument, some interpretive information if you're lucky, and the surrounding moorland and views toward the Moray coast. It's not a destination that'll keep you entertained for hours. Twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you want to sit and take in the space. Walkers and history types who are comfortable with ambiguity will get more from it than families looking for something interactive.

The journey to find it is half the appeal, really. You're in proper countryside here, the kind of terrain that rewards a bit of wandering. Nairn itself is a charming seaside town only a few miles away, and if you're based at Barrow Campsite just outside town, this is an easy morning excursion before heading to the beach or exploring the wider Highlands.

Don't expect barriers, visitor facilities, or someone selling tea. Just go because you're curious about what's out there, and because the drive through this part of the Highlands is worthwhile in itself. It fits nicely into a broader Highland holiday rather than being a standalone pillar to plan around.
