The Ord

The walk up The Ord is nothing fancy - a straightforward hill walk that rewards you with proper views across the Moray Firth and down towards Nairn. It's the kind of ascent that feels manageable without being a doddle, taking most walkers around 45 minutes to the top depending on pace and fitness.

What you get at the summit is the thing. On a clear day, the vista stretches across water and lowland Aberdeenshire, with enough definition to pick out landmarks and feel like you've actually earned something. The path itself is well-trodden and reasonably maintained, though it can get boggy in wet weather - so decent boots matter.

This works best for walkers after something achievable without a full day's commitment, rather than casual strollers. Families with children who've done a few hills before will manage it fine; very young kids might find 45 minutes up a steady gradient tedious. History enthusiasts won't find much to chew on here - it's a landscape walk, not a heritage site.

Timing matters. Early morning or late afternoon light across the Firth is genuinely worth planning for. Avoid midday when the light flattens everything. It's free to walk, obviously, and open year-round - though winter can make the underfoot conditions sketchy.

If you're camping at Barrow Campsite or ACE Adventures near Nairn, The Ord makes a logical half-day outing. It's close enough to slot into a longer holiday without demanding a major expedition.
