Stover Country Park

The lake at Stover is the real draw here - a proper body of water that catches the light beautifully on clear days, surrounded by woodland that's thick enough to feel properly separated from Newton Abbot just down the road. You can walk the perimeter, which takes a leisurely hour or so, or cut across the grounds if you want something shorter. The whole place has that managed-but-not-manicured feel: wild enough to be interesting, but with decent paths so you won't end up ankle-deep in mud.

It's a solid spot for families with younger children or anyone who fancies a gentle woodland ramble without the trudge of proper moorland. Walkers will find it fine rather than spectacular - there's nothing technical about it, and the views are pleasant rather than jaw-dropping. Birdwatchers and nature types will get more from it than those just after a quick leg-stretch, especially if you know what you're looking for.

If you're staying at Oakmoor Touring Park - just down the road at 1.7 miles - this makes an easy morning out before heading elsewhere. Dornafield Dartmoor Campsite, a bit further at 4.4 miles, is another decent base for exploring the area. The reserve itself appears to be free access, which is rare enough these days to be worth the detour. Go early if you can, or mid-week if you're around then. Weekends get busy with locals who know a good thing when they see it.
