Stour Valley Nature Reserve

The Stour Valley Nature Reserve sprawls across wetland and woodland on the Dorset-Hampshire border, just outside Ringwood. It's the kind of place where you'll actually see things - herons stalking the water, dragonflies in summer, migrating warblers if you time it right. The reserve covers proper habitat: reedbeds, wet woodland, open water. You walk the marked trails, take your binoculars, and get on with it. No visitor centre nonsense, no gift shop.

This is fundamentally a birdwatching and nature photography location. Walkers come here too, but they're secondary. The trails are flat and easy - nothing strenuous - which means families with young kids or older visitors won't struggle, though honestly the appeal fades fast if you're not genuinely interested in what you might spot. Allow two to three hours if you're doing it properly with optics. Early morning or dusk yields better sightings than midday.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Meadowbank Holidays and Oakdene Forest Park are both within a couple of miles - this makes a solid half-day excursion. It fills a morning nicely before heading into Ringwood for lunch. The reserve itself is free to access, which is decent value. Spring and autumn migrations are peak times, though winter can surprise you too. Summer's quieter on the bird front, though the dragonfly populations are extraordinary. Worth the detour if wildlife interests you; skip it if you're after a standard country walk with a view.
