Bronze Age Saucer Barrow

Walking out to the Bronze Age Saucer Barrow near Ringwood feels like stepping backwards through time, though not dramatically. It's a low, circular earthwork - the sort of thing you might walk past without noticing if you weren't paying attention. The "saucer" shape is the giveaway: a shallow depression surrounded by a gentle rim, built sometime around 3,500 years ago as a burial mound.

You won't find much infrastructure here. No visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards spelling everything out for you. That's rather the point. It's archaeology at ground level - literally. History types and walkers will get far more from this than families after a quick afternoon out; younger children tend to find unmarked bumps in the landscape underwhelming. Allow 30 minutes if you're making a proper trip of it, longer if you're combining it with a ramble across the heathland.

The site sits within easy reach of the holiday parks clustered around the area - Oakdene Forest Park, Meadowbank Holidays, and Forest Edge Holiday Park are all within five miles. If you're basing yourself at one of these, it's worth a detour for a walk, though don't expect dramatic views or crowds. Dorset's archaeology is everywhere if you know where to look, and this quiet mound is a genuine glimpse of Bronze Age burial practice, weathered and understated. Bring an OS map and sensible boots.
