Storiths Crag

The walk up Storiths Crag, just outside Skipton, rewards you with one of those views that makes the climb entirely worthwhile. It's not a massive peak - more of a crag than a mountain - but that's exactly why it works so well for a half-day outing from any of the nearby caravan parks like Catgill Farm or Bolton Abbey Estate.

You're looking at roughly forty minutes to an hour to get to the top, depending on your pace and where you start from. The paths are well-trodden and manageable for most fitness levels, though it does get a bit steeper as you near the summit. Once you're up there, the Wharfedale views spread out in front of you - proper Yorkshire moorland and valley all the way. Clear day essential though; mist here is miserable.

It's ideal for walkers who don't want a full fell day out. Families with confident hikers will get something from it, though very young children might find the push to the top a stretch. History buffs probably won't find much to grip them - it's geology and landscape you're after here.

The whole experience is free, naturally. From Skipton itself you can wander out and pick up the paths without any faffing about with car parks or entrance fees. If you're based at Olicana Park or Draughton Heights, it's close enough for an afternoon venture that won't eat into your holiday plans. Best visited on a crisp, clear morning when you can actually see what you've climbed for.
