Stopham Church

A 13th-century flint church standing alone in the water meadows between Pulborough and Storrington, Stopham Church is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. There's something wonderfully peaceful about finding it tucked away by the River Arun - the setting matters as much as the building itself.

Inside, the church is modest but atmospheric. Medieval wall paintings survive in decent condition, and there's a lovely sense of continuity walking through a space that's been used for worship for eight centuries. The churchyard has gravestones dating back generations, the kind of detail that interests history buffs more than casual visitors.

It's free to visit, and the walk here is genuinely pleasant if you're based at one of the local glamping sites like Wakestone & Wild or Woodfire at Westerlands - both within a few miles. This isn't a destination that demands hours; thirty minutes inside and around the churchyard is realistic. Go early morning if you can. Late afternoon light through the windows is rather special.

Families with young children might find twenty minutes enough before they need to move on. Walkers doing the South Downs or exploring the Arun Valley will find it a worthwhile detour. It's the sort of church that rewards those who appreciate quiet spaces and medieval craftsmanship without needing crowds or visitor facilities to justify the trip.
