Stony Wood

The trees here are properly dense - Stony Wood near Maidstone is the sort of place where you lose the sky after about thirty metres. Ancient woodland, the kind where the undergrowth actually feels untamed, and paths wind through a mix of beech, oak, and sweet chestnut without much fuss or signposting. You'll walk through sections where the canopy is so thick the light goes greenish, then suddenly break into a clearing and remember where you are. The forest floor is thick with leaf matter and stones - hence the name, presumably - so good boots are non-negotiable unless you fancy squelchy socks.

It's absolutely the sort of place walkers will lose two or three hours to without even noticing. Families with kids who like exploring will find enough here to keep them engaged, though there's no café, play equipment, or any of the managed attractions - it's just wood, paths, and whatever wildlife you happen across. Bring your own snacks and water. The real draw is the quiet. Close enough to Maidstone that you're not spending your entire morning driving, but far enough that you actually feel removed from things.

If you're bunking down at one of the nearby glamping sites like Chegworth Mill or Oak View, this makes a cracking half-day expedition. Free to access and no time restrictions that I'm aware of - just show up with proper footwear and reasonable expectations. Winter's muddy as hell; spring and autumn are genuinely lovely. Summer can be thick with insects if you're bothered by that sort of thing.
