Stony Hazel Forge

You won't find gift shops or admission fees at Stony Hazel Forge - this is archaeology in the raw. The site near Ulverston is the remains of an iron smelting forge that's genuinely old, the kind of place that makes you stop and think about what industrial heritage actually means. What you're looking at are the physical traces of metalworking that happened centuries ago, embedded in the Cumbrian landscape.

It's not a reconstructed visitor attraction with interpretation boards. Instead, you're picking through the actual remains yourself, which some people find brilliant and others find a bit underwhelming - depends entirely on how much your imagination needs feeding. History buffs and archaeology types will find it worthwhile; families with young kids expecting a interactive experience will likely be disappointed after fifteen minutes.

The location works well if you're basing yourself at one of the caravan parks nearby - Hill of Oaks is closest at just over 3 miles out, and Newby Bridge and Park Cliffe are similarly close. Pair it with proper Lake District walking or a visit to Ulverston itself if you want to build a proper half-day out of it. Go on a clear day; muddy conditions will make the site harder to read and less rewarding. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested in the industrial archaeology, less if you're just curious.
