Gummer's How

The walk up Gummer's How takes about forty minutes from the car park near Ulverston, and frankly it's one of those peaks that punches above its weight. You're looking at roughly 300 metres of ascent - not exactly Alpine - but the views across Morecambe Bay and down to Windermere justify the huff and puff. On a clear day you can see right across to the Lake District hills proper, which makes for decent photos without needing mountaineering skills.

It's a fell rather than a dramatic crag, so families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might grumble on the way up, depending on their constitution, but the summit's open and there's proper space to sit about with a sandwich. The path itself is straightforward - well-trodden, no scrambling - which makes it popular with weekend walkers and locals from Ulverston who just want a quick leg-stretch with a payoff.

The caravan parks scattered round here - Hill of Oaks is closest at under a mile away - make this a logical stop if you're camping between Windermere and the coast. It's not a full-day venture; two hours all in, which means you could easily fit it round other park activities. Worth doing if you're based nearby, though I wouldn't drive an hour out of your way specially for it. The real draw is how accessible it is and the view south over Morecambe Bay, which has a proper wilderness feel despite being so close to civilisation.
