Raven's Barrow

Standing 255 metres above the surrounding Furness countryside, this modest fell offers surprisingly expansive views across Morecambe Bay and the southern Lake District fells. The climb from Ulverston takes about an hour through woodland paths that can get properly muddy after rain - decent boots essential.

Walkers who appreciate a good summit without the crowds will find this spot rewarding. On clear days, you can pick out the Pennines to the east and Blackpool Tower glinting in the distance across the bay. It's not technically challenging, but the final stretch does require a bit of scrambling over limestone outcrops.

Families with older children will manage fine, though toddlers might struggle with the rougher sections near the top. The lack of proper waymarking means you'll want an OS map or GPS - easy to take a wrong turn in the lower woodlands.

For those staying at Hill of Oaks or Park Cliffe near Windermere, it makes a decent morning walk before heading back to the lakes. The proximity to several holiday parks around Newby Bridge means you could easily combine this with a Lake District break, though honestly, most visitors will find the higher fells more compelling. Still, if you fancy a quieter peak with that proper sense of achievement, Raven's Barrow delivers without the tourist buses.
