Stoner Hill

The walk up Stoner Hill rewards you with proper views across the South Downs, and the climb itself is manageable enough that you won't be cursing by the summit. It's a genuine peak rather than a gentle slope - nothing dramatic, but solid and satisfying. The hill sits just outside Petersfield, making it an excellent half-day outing if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Adhurst Yurts or Cedar Valley.

What you get is open downland walking with clear sightlines across Hampshire. On a decent day, the views stretch convincingly far. The paths are well-trodden and straightforward, so you won't need specialist equipment or a detailed map. Allow two hours return from the car park, longer if you're stopping to actually enjoy the vistas rather than just bagging the top.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a technical climb and families with primary-age children manage it fine, though the walk itself isn't thrilling enough to captivate younger kids for long. If you're after dramatic scenery or a challenging route, look elsewhere - Stoner Hill is honest rather than spectacular.

Combine it with Woodlands Camping if you're planning a longer stay and want to tick off multiple Downs walks. The area rewards a morning visit rather than an afternoon - the light is better, you'll beat the school groups, and there's time for a proper pub lunch in Petersfield afterwards. Worth the detour if you're already in the region, less so if you're making a special journey.
